EATING DISORDER PSYCHOTHERAPY GROUPS

Groups are often a helpful adjunct to individual treatment. They are a safe place to speak with others who share struggles regarding food and weight. For some, the groups can also be an important way of getting introduced to therapy in general.

You can call the Center (212-989-3987) for an appointment to discuss the possibility of entering a group. Your first meeting will be individually with the group therapist so that she can assess how the group can best meet your needs.

8-WEEK GROUPS:

The focus of our short-term groups is on understanding how eating problems develop as an attempt to manage difficult feelings. Group members will learn to identify trigger situations and develop specific strategies, other than bingeing, purging, or starving, for dealing with food and stress.

ONGOING GROUPS:

In our longer-term groups, the emphasis is on exploring what gets in the way of establishing and maintaining healthier eating and coping behaviors. In an atmosphere of trust and support, members are encouraged to challenge the negative self-perceptions and self-defeating attitudes which maintain their maladaptive eating patterns.

FREE SUPPORT GROUPS:

We offer free support groups for anyone with an eating disorder. Each group is run by one of our experienced staff members. Group members are encouraged to share their experiences, suggest alternatives to disordered eating behaviors, and generally act as supportive guides to one another in the process of recovery.

Support Groups are held:

The first Monday of each month from 8:30-9:45 P.M. in the Union Square area.

Please call Dede Kammerling at 212-989-3987 to reserve a space.

FAMILY MEETINGS

Eating disorders affect not only the person who suffers with the problem but also family members and spouses. Family meetings offer guidance, exploration and advice as to how to help someone who is in trouble with food. Short-term consultations, family therapy and family support meetings are available as needed.

FEES AND INSURANCE

Some insurances are accepted and a sliding scale is considered when there are financial constraints. Please have information regarding your insurance coverage available when you call to make a consultation.
