When Parents are Partners: A Unique Program for the Treatment of Eating Disorders

After many years of working with eating disordered patients and their families, Dr. Brisman, in collaboration with Dr. Judith Ruskay Rabinor, is pleased to announce When Parents are Partners: A Unique Program for the Treatment of Eating Disorders. This individualized treatment program supports and guides parents who have daughters or sons who struggle with bulimia, anorexia, binge eating disorder and/or body image problems. Recent research has documented the importance of parental involvement in refeeding anorexic youngsters who live at home. However, less is known about parental involvement with binge eating, bulimia, and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). Questions also arise with teens or young adults living away from home. Additionally, other research and clinical observations indicate that the ways in which parents can be effective, even with anorexia, vary from family to family. When Parents are Partners invites parents to join in the psychotherapy process to allow for the best possibility of recovery. Just what this involvement means differs for each family. One size does not fit all.

We consult with families about what works best in each unique case and, with this in mind, we employ home visits or consult with families from afar, using tools aimed at providing visible feedback regarding the actual family meals. An ongoing exploration and collaboration with parents is at the core of our approach.
